Vet School O-week and More Olympics

August 20th, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve had 3 days of vet school orientation so far, which for the most part has been a whirlwind of activity. I spent most of today following around a 4th year student in the Vet Med Teaching Hospital (and specifically in small animal general health care).  We watched on a video monitor as an 8in piece of grass was removed from a dog’s trachea, which was pretty darn cool to get to see.

I also have a brand new Toshiba Tablet PC which I’ve been playing around with. The school gives us laptops with all our notes/handouts/etc. as Microsoft OneNote files. It’s a pretty cool deal because it helps reduce the amount of paper and notebooks I’ll have to carry around, helps keep all my notes in the same place, and saves a few trees in the process. OneNote (so far) seems like a fairly spiffy and fairly easy to use program. It’s easy to add and move information around, either as new pages or by writing on existing pages (either by typing in text or using the pen). Also, the handwriting software is brilliant, as it seems to have no problem with my messy half-print/half-cursive handwriting.

Past Olympian of the Day: Lis Hartel. Hartel won silver medals in dressage at both the 1952 and 1956 summer games, despite being paralyzed from the knees down because of polio. (She was paralyzed enough that she needed assistance to get both on and off of her horse.) She also was the first woman to win a gold metal in any of the equestrian sports. (Equestrian sports are some of the few Olympic events where women and men compete equally against each other.)
