My freezer has gone the way of the buffalo…

Or more accurately, the buffalo have gone the way of my freezer. It was a good weekend for food. I’m starting to feel more settled in Manhattan after a week of vet school orientation. My classmates all seem pretty awesome and I think they’re going to be a good group to spend the next four years with. The vet classes and labs count a lot on teamwork and working together, so it was really nice to have a week to start getting to know each other before we’re all thrown into classes and labs together tomorrow. (Although, it’s going to take at least a few more weeks to get all 108 names down!)

One of my classmates had about a dozen of us over Friday night for homemade pizza, which was absolutely excellent. Hopefully I can get some lessons/recipes from her, as pizza is still something I’m much more comfortable ordering in than trying to cook myself.

However, I did make it to the Manhattan Farmer’s Market Saturday morning. The selection was great–not just produce (which was all I was expecting), but meat, breads and pastries, and even a vendor selling plants. I ended up with carrots, green beans, bell peppers, a loaf of habanero lime bread, and slightly more than a pound and a half of buffalo burgers. I should have bought some corn too, but figured I had more than enough to probably keep me busy cooking until next Saturday!

For dinner last night I cooked one of the buffalo burgers, a bit of pasta, and some of the green beans (which I mixed with some bacon bits and bacon grease). The green beans were absolutely excellent. Most of the green beans I eat come out of a can, and these had a really nice flavor and texture. The buffalo burger was pretty good too. It tasted a lot like lean beef, but with just a slightly different flavor. I don’t think I’ve ever actually had buffalo before, in fact. I talked a bit yesterday to the man selling the meat, and the buffalo are from somewhere sort of near Manhattan and are grass-fed, without any hormones/chemicals/grain/etc.
